8th National Women’s Congress (1997-2002)

Attending the Congress were 1.289 delegates (including 900 official delegates) representing for more than 10 million members and 24 million women nationwide; 25 international women delegations from 22 countries and the representatives from the Women's International Democratic Federation, the Federation of Freedom Committees, and the Federation of ASEAN Women's Organizations. The Congress was honored to welcome General Secretary of the Party Central Committee Do Muoi to attend and deliver a guiding speech.
The Congress set out 5 main programs to be implemented during the term: To foster and enhance knowledge, skills and capacity for women; To enhance women in research and science technology application, supporting women in income increase; To promote heathcare for women and children, implementing family planning, raising children well, and building happy families; To build a strong VWU; To conduct research and monitoring supervision activities.
The Congress launched two patriotic emulation movements, namely “Women learn actively, work creatively, raise good children, and build happy families” and “Women help each other develop household economies, diligently build the nation”.
The Congress elected the Eighth Central Committee consisting of 130 members, in which 126 members were elected at the Congress. The committee decided there were 21 members in the Presidium, in which 19 members were elected at the Congress. Ms. Truong My Hoa was reelected as President; Ms. Le Thi Thu, Ms. Truong Thi Khue, Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Minh were elected as Vice Presidents.
In February 1998, Ms. Truong My Hoa was appointed as the Vice President of the National Assembly, and Ms. Ha Thi Khiet was elected to be the President of the Vietnam Women's Union.
