UN Special Rapporteur works with Central Vietnam Women's Union

Hanoi, Vietnam - November 14, 2023 - Vice President of the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) Tran Lan Phuong worked with United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to development Surya Deva on his country visit to Vietnam.

At the meeting with Mr. Surya Deva, Ms. Phuong highlighted the VWU's ongoing efforts to empower women across all fields, with a particular focus on supporting vulnerable groups.

In detail, the VWU has actively participated in policy advocacy, proposing to mainstream gender into laws such as the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control (2022), the Land Law and the Social Insurance Law (2023)…; organized a hybrid Dialogue Conference 2022 chaired by the Prime Minister on "Promoting gender equality and the role of women in socio-economic development" to enable women nationwide to make their voices heard by the Head of the Government.

Regarding female cadre work, VWU drives up female political participation through consultations, capacity building, nominating women candidates to leadership and management positions etc. Notably, female representation in the 15th National Assembly climbed to 30.26%, a 3.54% increase from the previous term. Similarly, local people’s councils saw a rise in female representation for the 2021-2026 term, reaching 29%.

The VWU implemented activities to support women in poverty reduction, economic development, and creative startups. During the 2017-2022 term, through livelihood models, credit & savings activities, and other support activities, the VWU helped more than 2 million poor households, of which nearly 270 thousand households escaped multidimensional poverty. It also actively contributes to implementing the National Financial Inclusion Strategy until 2025, with a vision to 2030.

The VWU has also carried out Government Project to support women in addressing social issues related to women and children. Such Programs as "Patron Parent" that supports orphans due to Covid-19 and Program "Supporting women in border areas" have been highly appreciated by Party, State leaders and the society.

In addition, the VWU implemented activities on environmental protection, response to climate change, assigned tasks in 03 national target programs, international cooperation activities etc.

Mr. Surya Deva expressed his impression and appreciation of the activities that the Vietnam Women's Union has implemented recently.

Both Ms. Tran Lan Phuong and Mr. Surya Deva expressed hope for future collaboration between the VWU and the UN to tackle challenges faced by women and children and to further empower women, aiming for equality, development, and peace.
