On behalf of the Vietnam Women’s Union, Ms. Hoang Thi Ai Nhien warmly welcomed the Swedish delegation, and introduced them to the traditions of “heroism, indomitableness, faithfulness, and resourcefulness” among Vietnamese women, the VWU’s history, and the achievements of Vietnamese women in the national construction and defense. The Vice President expressed her appreciation for the valuable assistance of the Swedish government to Vietnamese people, and specifically to Vietnamese women. She emphasized that the Vietnam Women’s Union has always considered Sweden to be an example that the Vietnam Women’s Union can learn from through sharing experiences on gender equality and the advancement of women. In the context of current difficulties due to global economic recession and social issues such as environmental degradation, the threat of natural disasters, and epidemic diseases, Vietnamese people in general, and Vietnamese women in particular, are being faced with greater challenges. Ms. Ai Nhien expressed hope for the continuation of cooperation and support from Sweden for the women’s movement and the advancement of gender equality in Vietnam.
At the meeting, the two sides exchanged their experiences and challenges related to the prevention and control of violence, human trafficking, and the implementation of gender equality in each country. Ms. Beatrice Ask, Swedish Minister of Justice, confirmed the strong and stable partnership between Sweden and Vietnam. Moving forward, Sweden and Vietnam have a continued desire to address and overcome prevailing social issues, and to cooperate with each other especially on issues related to women and children.
After the meeting, the Vice President and the delegation visited and gave gifts to victims of human trafficking residing at the Peace House Shelter in Hanoi.
