12/09/2006
With the guideline “State and people work together”, Son La Women’s Union recently supplied 14 million VND to 2 poor members’ families (H’Mong ethnic minority) in Bac Yen district to build Affection Houses.

On 30th June, 2 Affection Houses worth 40 million VND were inaugurated to Song Thi Mo in Moi village and Mrs. Song Thi Sau in Hong Ngai village. Mrs. Song Thi Sau is 57 years old. Her family is very needy with 13 mouths to feed and 4 generations living together.

4,000 Women’s Union members and staff belonging to ethnic minorities now literate

Bac Yen is a highland and very needy district in Son La province. Nearly 50% of the population here belongs to H’Mong ethnic group. In previous years, illiteracy and re-illiteracy rate of the ethnic women was high, accounting for 40% and 80% of the population in some areas.

Therefore, Bac Yen Women’s Union considered illiteracy eradication for ethnic women as a focal and urgent task and a main target of action by the Women’s Union at all levels.

From 2001 until now, illiteracy eradication in Bac Yen has been implemented by all levels, branches and people. In the daytime, ethnic minority women work in the fields and in the evening to go to school. Many of them find teachers to learn from. Typically, WU in Sap Viet village, Ta Khoa commune has 24 women who themselves find Mrs. Lo Thi Khanh – a teacher of a communal primary school to learn the alphabet.

As a result, in 5 years (2001-2005), more than 4,000 ethnic women who are Union’s members, especially H’Mong women in Bac Yen are no longer illiterate. 411 H’Mong women are universalized primary education, 150 women secondary education.
