Dak Lak province: Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, a VWU’s member with disability, starting her business of butterfly pea flower tea

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, 35-year-old resident of Thien An ward, was born deaf and dumb. In 2012, she got married and gave birth to a baby girl. Difficulties piled up when she divorced and became a single mother. Economic worries and sleepless nights for a long time made her health deteriorated and she could barely concentrate at work.

During a local WU regular meeting, she was suggested to try butterfly pea flower tea for her insomnia. Having made the tea by herself from picking and drying flowers to brewing tea, she found herself better after two or three days. The idea of making butterfly pea flower tea for sale came to her mind. On social networks, she found out that butterfly pea flower is good not only for insomnia but also for beauty, immune, heart, diabetes, etc. She then decided to learn how to plant  the flower and to make tea, preserving the original color as well as its nutritional value. At first, the tea making was not so successful. After many attempts and failures, batches of beautiful and delicious tea were produced.

Firstly, she introduced the product to local WU members. Gradually, they liked tea and introduced it to their friends and relatives as well as residents of other parts of the province. Each year, she sells about 50kg of tea with the price of 500,000 VND/kg (more than 20 USD), which helps cover the living expenses of her and her daughter. Recently, through the Women's Union of Thien An ward, she has borrowed 40 million VND from the Social Policy Bank to expand production and purchase equipments to produce flower powder as spice. With her firm spirit of overcoming difficulties and starting business for economic development, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang is a good example for local women to follow.

Binh Dinh province: Ms. Hong successfully starts a business of rice paper

Ms. Le Thi Hong, a 41-year-old resident of Hoai Phu commune decided to invest in rice paper machinery for high economic efficiency. She regularly attended training classes and searched for online information on flour preparing and machine operating process to produce rice paper of good quality. She then borrowed 100 million VND from the Social Policy Bank and was supported by the communal Women's Union with one million VND to invest in a rice paper production line.

With the new equipment, she can  sell about 2,000 pieces of rice paper per day for 600 thousand VND (about 28 USD). After nearly two years, up to now, Ms. Hong is now employing 3-4 local workers who get paid 3.5 to 4 million VND per month. Her rice paper products are sold mainly within Hoai Nhon town, neighboring districts and even to some provinces.

Dong Thap province: The higher the age, the higher the will

Mrs. Le Thi Chinh, born in 1945, is living in My Phu C hamlet, My An commune, Thap Muoi district. Despite old age and illness, she managed to get out of poverty by herself.  She borrowed 10 million VND from the Bank for Social Policy and turned her 2,000-square-meter garden into a model of growing corns, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. These crops are easy to care for, suitable for her piece of land and has short cultivation cycle, thus they bring her an average income of 25 - 35 million VND per year.

Her two children are encouraged by her to work for companies outside the locality with a stable salary of 5-7 million VND/month/person. Since then, the average income of her household is from 180 to 230 million VND/year. In a short time, Mrs. Chinh's household economy has become stabilized. She paid back the loan and built a more spacious house.

With her self-reliance, Mrs. Le Thi Chinh managed to get out of poverty sustainably. She was honored by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thap province as a typical household escaping poverty in 2020.
