The Women’s Union of Luong Tai district (Bac Ninh province) and the work of

Luong Tai district has 4 catholic communes and the town has 994 women who are Women’s Union (WU) members, accounting for 54% of catholic women from 18 years and above. These figures makes Luong Tai district a good example on mobilizing catholic women to join WU.

The WU is aware that catholic women not o­nly have material and spiritual needs but particular catholic beliefs. o­n special occasions WU from all levels come and visit catholic and WU staff. This action contributes to catholic women having a strong connection with the WU.

 

Since 2002, WU staff from different levels in the district have coordinated with Religion Sections to graspResolution 7 of the Party,promoting national unity o­n religious and ethnic issues and especially the Ordinance o­n Religious Beliefs and the Instruction Decree 22 of the Government o­n Implementation of the Ordinance. Through groups and club meetings, trainings classes and communication activities, people and catholic women were able to know and understand the policies o­n religious issues of the Government and Party.

 

Over the last 5 years, the district WU has also organized 14 training courses to provide knowledge o­n gender for 994 WU’s catholic members, nearly 100% of leaders and mass organizations from villages in the whole district.

 

Luong Tai WU also gives loans and helps catholic people throughout difficult situations. To date, 472 loans for household economic development with a total amount of 564 million VND have been disbursed to catholic women. With this fund, 25 women saving groups, 32 affection groups and 9 credit and saving groups have been set up. WUs also organized 18 technology transfer classes for catholic women o­n poultry raising, aquaculture, planting fruits. These activities helped many families escape from poverty. Some families in Phuong Giao village (in the town), Nghia La village (Trung Chinh commune) even became rich.

 

Besides, the WU in coordination with the Health section has organized periodic health check-up’s for 95% of catholic women and provided knowledge o­n environmental sanitation, food safety and health care for women and children; encourage families to sign the commitment “family with no children to commit crime and social evils”. As a result, every year, 100% of catholic families signed and follow the commitment. 7 clubs ''women with population”, 6 clubs ''women not to have 3rd child'' have been set up with 557 members. WU has established 2 vocational training bases to offer training o­n rattan knitting, gloves and raincoat making. Because of this, 106 catholic members got permanent job’s with the average monthly income ranging from 300,000 – 400,000VND.


WUs at all levels in the district also pay attention to improving the quality of women’s groups and chapters as well as selecting skilled catholic people to train them to become WU staffs.

The above-mentioned activities together with effective implementation of the emulation movement ''women actively study and work, and to build happy family'', WU of Luong Tai district has been given many certificates of merit by the provincial WU and People’s Committee recognizing its achievements in WU’s activities in general and religious issues in particular.
