Kim Chung – great guitar talent

07/08/2006
Her father died a month ago. Her mother has fallen ill for more than a week. The plan to organise a performance to announce her first classical guitar album was postponed.

Kim Chung is viewed as a young talent and a rare guitarist of the professional guitar artists. There are only two female professional guitarists in Ho Chi Minh City – Kim Chung and Phuong Thao.

“At present, Kim Chung has no opponents in tremolo techniques,” said guitarist Pham Thanh Loc.

When asked if she had any secrets, she smiled and said: “I do not understand why I can play like that.I mostly play according my natural instinct instead of training a lot.”

Apart from the natural gift, Kim Chung has been taught by many talented teachers. When she was 11 years old, Kim Chung was taught by Le Vinh Phuc and then by Huynh Huu Dan. When studying at the musical conservatory, Kim Chung was carefully instructed by Bui The Dung and Phung Tuan Vu.

Kim Chung won a series of awards at the 1997 National Guitar Competition, gaining three awards at the same time, the first prize, the prize for Vietnamese piece of music best player and the prize for the best female guitarist.

With the achievements and excellent university graduation results in 1999, Kim Chung was invited to work as a lecturer for Ho Chi Minh City Musical Conservatoire.

Particularly, in 2001, AECI gave a scholarship to follow a guitar master course at
the Madrid Royal Conservatoire in Spain. After two years’ time, her tremolo technique was much improved.

Her album has just been released but because of her mother’s illness, she has no heart and mind to give her debut performance. Many have had a chance to enjoy her performances but are still waiting for her album-releasing performance. For long-nurtured years, her classical guitar album has been completed.

With the title “Remembrance of Tremolo,” Kim Chung has made the best use of her strong points to use tremolo techniques in most of the works in the album: from Romance by Anon, Recuerdos de la Alhambra by F. Tarrega, Una limosnapor el amor de Dios by A Barrios, Ave Maria by F. Schubert to Sakura (Japanese folk song).

She also plays other famous works in her album, including Study No.5 (F. Sor), Allegro (Sonate brillant op. 15 – M. Guiliani), Prelude (Suite in A minor – J.S. Bach).

The whole album was recorded at Ho Chi Minh City Musical Conservatory
ory by Dutch expert Erik Schuring who then took the album for mixture in the Netherlands and sent master to Kim Chung.
