Women respond to anti-poverty call

HAI PHONG — More than a thousand female workers attended the Global Call for Action Against Poverty by ActionAid Viet Nam held in the northern port city of Hai Phong yesterday to mark the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty which fell on Saturday.

The participants discussed practical actions to improve living standards, how to create equality and develop favourable conditions for female workers who had actively contributed to alleviating poverty.

Previously, o­n Friday, a ceremony to mark the World Food Day was held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in northern Phu Tho Province.

Two frozen tigers seized in Ha Noi

HA NOI — Police last Friday discovered two frozen tigers in a taxi o­n National Highway No. 1A’s Thanh Tri District section.

Nguyen Thanh Trung, a resident of the southern province of Tay Ninh, told the Ha Noi environmental police division that he was paid VND20 million (US$1,200) to transport the frozen tigers from the south to Thanh Hoa Province for later sale in Ha Noi for VND3.4 million ($180) per kilo.

In related news, HCM City Forest Guard Department o­n the same day seized 10 pangolins, 15 weasels and 34 cobras from illegal traders in Hoc Mon District. The animals were transferred to the Cu Chi Centre for Wild Animal Rescue.

Sony presents gifts to storm-hit students

QUANG NGAI —Sony Electronics Viet Nam’s general director Kimihiro Itoki yesterday presented gifts worth VND200 million (US$11,000) to students in Hue and Quang Ngai that have been hard hit by recent storms.

The gifts included books and other school equipment, which were handed over directly to the students by the Japanese general director.

Last week, Sony donated VND500 million (US$28,000).

Over 900 register for cornea donation

HA NOI — Over 900 people in Ha Noi have registered to donate their cornea after death, said the chairman of the municipal Red Cross, Nguyen Van Lam.

Four districts in the city – Hoan Kiem, Cau Giay, Tu Liem and Dong Anh – have conducted a project to increase voluntary cornea donation, in a programme launched by the Viet Nam Red Cross and ORBIS.

For World Sight Day, the National Eye Hospital and the Ha Noi Eye Hospital have also given free examinations to hundreds of patients.
