Nguyen Thi Tinh, her mother, says that Tham was born without arms, and the mother has cried often when thinking about the girl's future. However, she and the whole family, and neighbors and teachers have been surprised at Tham's strong will.

This was clear even when learning to walk, when her head and body were hurt many times because she could not keep her balance. But Tham kept trying and she could walk when she was three. At school, Tham uses her feet to write and draw pictures, though the action made them bleed. Teachers praise her intelligence, beautiful pictures and clear writing. As well, Tham eats her meals, arranges clothes and does household chores using her feet.
