Review Conference of 10-year implementation of the Ordinance No. 06 by Ministry of Politics on enhancing leadership and direction of drug management and prevention task.

The Review Conference of Vietnam Women’s Union on the 10-year implementation (1996-2006) of the Politburo’s Ordinance No. 06 on enhancing leadership and direction to the task of drug prevention and control was held on 29th December 2006.

President of the VWU, Mme. Ha Thi Khiet and Deputy Minister – Mr. Le The Tiem and  epresentatives from Ministry of Culture and Information, High Command of Border Guard, Anti - social evil Department, International Drug control and Prevention Agency in Vietnam…and several leaders of Women’s Union at all levels attended the conference.

 

The report presented at the conference revealed that drug abuse in Vietnam has become more complicated and severe. By the end of June 2006, the number of recorded drug addicts was 159,305 persons, increasing by nearly 900 persons compared to the end of 2005. Drug abuse leads to a lot of bad effects, especially destroying family happiness, deteriorating social and ethic values and causing serious illness and poverty. Considering drug prevention is the first priority, since 1996 the VWU has made annual plans directing women’s union at all levels to organize anti-drug activities and has obtained positive achievements. As mothers, sisters, wives in families and active members in the community have conducted realistic work o­n the right track thus making significant contribution to drug prevention task.

 

Delivering an opening speech at the Conference, Madam Truong Thi Khue, Standing Vice President of the VWU acknowledged great efforts of the VWU over the last 10 years implementing the Politburo’s Ordinance No. 06. Communication and education o­n drug prevention have been improved with various diversified forms. Several effective communication models have been built and replicated. Consulting, persuading and sensitizing activities have been carried out actively and effectively to help guilty persons to rehabilitate and reintegrate into the community.

 

Deputy Minister of Public Security Le The Tiem presented the direction of drug prevention in the coming time focusing o­n the approach and direction of cooperation between the VWU and relevant branches such as the Police and Court…

 

Delivering speech at the Conference, President Ha Thi Khiet emphasized that the combat against drug addiction is very severe and complicated, which could cost blood, tears and even life. Therefore, to prevent and push backward this evil it needs the close and continuous cooperation of relevant agencies and the whole community.

 

At the Conference, delegates from cities and provincial women’s unions also shared their experiences o­n prevention and suppression of drug abuse in localities. Especially, the participants had a chance to meet with the 2 successful cases that stopped using drug, reintegrated well into the community as ordinary people in the society.
