27/10/2006
We visited Ms Nguyen Thi Hiep's family in Doai village, Vinh Thinh commune, Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province.

Her four storey house, which is located on the roadside in the commune, may have gradually erased sad memories of  the young girl's past.  She was orphaned right at birth so. She was adopted by a childless couple. When small, she   was very thin and often got sick and there was always medicine on her bed. Mrs Pham Thi Huan, 80, her adopted mother, who she loves and shows great care to, said "only she grew up, diseases then disappear."

After her marriage to Tran Van Tiem, they had first boy. As a poor couple, she and her husband decided that her husband would do the farm work, while she would sell
tobacco, dried fish, and pork. In 1995, with her small savings from trading and with the borrowing of two goldtaels, she bought an ice cream making machine. She hired about 20-25 people to sell about 5,000 ice creams, which profited her family of VND 25,000 per day.  Later, because there were too many people making ice-cream so their business was no longer profitable. She borrowed more loans from the poverty reduction fund to raise pigs, chicken and ducks. So far, his farm has got hundreds of pigs, 4,000 chickens, 200 goats, dozens of cows and 8,000 ducks. Mrs Hiep said that after deducting production costs and paying her 20-25 workers, she profited about hundreds of million dong.

Ms Trinh Thi Phuong Loan, other successful woman in Thanh Hoa said that "dynamism, skillfulness, patience and thrift are important for doing business". She has developed a business which had been on the verge of going bankcrupt into a prestigious company called Da Lan joint stock company. The company has possessed a capital of nearly VND 10 billion and provided jobs for 150 workers. Thanks to her contributions, she has been presented the Labour Order, third class, and the role model title in the emulation movement.

Mrs Mai Thi Xuong, chairwoman of Thanh Hoa province' s Women's Union said that there have been hundreds of models having escaped poverty in Thanh Hoa province. Many women have become bright examples in overcoming difficulties and making rich, creating jobs for other people.
