Physically-challenged woman honored for steely determination

A Vietnamese ethnic minority woman has been awarded a prize for “overcoming suffering” thanks to her unyielding struggle against disability to provide for her family.

Thirty-two-year-old Phang Thi Phuong, a Mong ethnic minority was conferred the award jointly granted by Vietnam Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, Vietnam Sponsor Association for The Disabled and The Orphans, and United Pharma Vietnam.

 

The prize is aimed at honoring individuals or groups who exhibit steadfast determination to overcome their disability as well as those who provide assistance to disabled people.

Though Phuong was paralyzed at the young age of 10, she strove to walk by herself o­n the crutches.

 

Phuong’s mother died while she was 15 and her father had abandoned the family long before.

 

Instead of allowing the disability to get in her way, Phuong began her struggle to make end meets for her four siblings.

 

She took up various manual jobs will a steely determination, including selling vegetables, sewing and weaving, provided that they could help her earn a living.

 

To date, her admirable efforts have paid off. Phuong is currently enjoying stable earnings gained from leasing a house.

 

“It is a tremendous achievement for someone like me to receive this warm support and sympathy from the whole community,” Phuong said.
