Kind-hearted woman

In 1982, Mrs Nguyen Thi Phuong retired and lived in residence 4 which is near Hoa Huong railway station. In the first years after liberation, this used to be a poorest residence of the ward and district. It was also a place of social evil. As a social activist, she had a good understanding of the local people's circumstances. In 1984, she asked her ward to set up a cosy home for orphans.

At first, she took care of five orphans, namely Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nga, 11; Nguyen Thi Bich Van, 15; Nguyen Thi Bich Tram, 15; Nguyen Thi Tram Anh, 14 and Nguyen Thi Thanh Trang, 11.  Later, the home has accommodated 21 children aged between 3-15 years old.

To ensure living conditions for these children, Mrs Phuong has arranged part-time jobs in her locality for older children. However, these children still go to charity classes in the afternoon.

In addition, Mrs Phuong has raised four isolated elderly, aged 65 to 98. In the past six years, Mrs Phuong has paid rice, food, water and electricity supply and brought health care cards for them.

It is also noticeable that when there are some young people of the ward falling into drug addiction, she has called for the addicts to rehabilitate themselves at home. She has also contacted with the city's traditional medicine hospital to find medicine for these addicts.

Thanks to the support and assistance of the local authorities and local families, in the past years, Mrs Phuong has helped over 300 drug addicts to give up using drug with initial results.

With her kind heart, she is respected and admired by the local people. Mrs Phuong has been praised for her work.
