11/07/2006
On 19 June 2006, Ms. Truong Thi Anh, President of Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Union, led the charity mission that also included the Women’s Cultural House and Women’s Newspaper. This mission involved meeting and giving capital to 32 households located in districts such as Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Lien Chieu, Hai Chau and Hoa Vang (Da Nang city).

The capital of 90 million VND was funded by members and readers of the Women’s Newspaper. These communities had faced danger in the Chanchu storm. After the storm took place, for the fourth time, the HCM City WU and Women’s Newspaper went to Quang Nam, Da Nang to visit communities. Here they presented gifts, granted capital for women and provided scholarships for pupils coping with various difficulties. (Readers of Women Newspaper alone funded 156 million VND for the whole four phases).

Seventy-five residents of Da Nang city have gone missing since the Chanchu storm, of which Thanh Khe district suffered a severe loss with 44 deaths. Most of the deaths were family bread-winners of poor households therefore the consequences of damage done in storm is unaccountable.

“Damages in the storm are estimated at 18 billion VND, not to mention the delay in production and causing people to have an anxious state of mind worrying about the future.

However, because of the sharing and support of the country we were able contribute to helping households lacking economy. Over time, we have given women registered business in Phu Lam market with a model fee-exemption market stall, tax cut… for women made their living and have to shoulder the responsibilities of their families”, said Mr. Bui Van Tien – party committee secretary of Thanh Khe district.

Two widowed sisters in-law, Do Thi Phuong and Vo Thi Thanh Thuong (who lived in West Thanh Khe ward, Thanh Khe district) received 6 million VND. They said with tears in their eyes, “We will jointly collect this money to do our business in new market the next time. Our husbands died, we depend on ourselves to live now”.

The husbands of Ms. Phuong and Ms. Thuong were brothers and both went missing in the storm.

Uncountable difficulties and tears of the mothers and wives of the 32 missing fishermen, who HCM city WU visited, granted capital, shared their heart-breaking. “This capital will help wives and mothers to be fully confident, overcome their inner storm and the difficulties that lie ahead of them to raise their families”, said Mr. Bui Van Tien.
