Caesarean section – fashion of young mothers

21/09/2006
Caesarean sections have become the ‘fashion’ of expectant mothers, particularly the young. That fact is easy to see at hospitals in Hanoi now.

Caesarean sections have become quite popular at obstetrics hospitals in Vietnam, and are even being requested by expectant mothers who can easily deliver in the normal way. Why?

Selecting birthdays for children

Hoa’s family has chosen a good hour and good day for her to deliver her first child. At that time, even if Hoa hasn’t gone into labour, the child must be born.

“The fortune teller said that if my first paternal grandson is born at that hour and that day, he will have a good career and be very rich in the future, bringing good luck to the whole family. If hospitals refuse to perform a Caesarean section, we will visit personal clinics,” said Hoa’s mother-in-law.

Hoa’s mother-in-law has announced the news to all relatives to prepare for the event. Hoa, whether she likes or dislikes the idea, can’t cross her mother-in-law. Though she also wants to give birth at a good hour and on a good day, she is a little bit worried.

Hoa’s mother-in-law came up with this idea after seeing her neighbour’s boy delivered by Caesarean section and still be very healthy. Another reason is she believes in fortune tellers.

What’s more?

Many mothers say that they are afraid of pain while delivering child so they choose Caesarean section though they know that Caesarean sections may be dangerous.

Van in Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, said that after delivering her first baby she needed four stitches. That’s why she decided to have a Caesarean section the second time.

Some others want to give birth by Caesarean section just because they heard that it is safer for the baby with Caesarean section.

Doctor Nguyen Viet Tien, Director of the Central Obstetrics Hospital, frankly said that the line between making a decision to have a Caesarean section or giving birth in the normal way is very fine, especially in the case that expectant mothers have abnormal signs. In addition, doctors are influenced by pressure from relatives of expectant mothers in deciding to apply Caesarean section.

Caesarean sections are still the option of many young expectant mothers though experts confirm that giving birth the normal way is much better.
