In January, 2021, the Project Management Board held a workshop to review the project implementation in 2020 and work out the project plan for 2021 with the participation of leader representatives of Plan Vietnam, People's Committee, education sector, and Women's Union in the two project provinces. VWU Vice President Tran Thi Huong attended the Workshop.

The project “We strive for a just world that advances children’s rights and equality for girls”, launched in 2017, has been implemented by Plan International Viet Nam (Plan Vietnam), Center for Live and Learn for Environment and Community (Live & Learn) and Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) with financial support from the Government of Belgium (Directorate-general for Development Co-operation - DGD) through Plan Belgium. The project aims at early childhood care and development for children aged 0 to 8 in Kon Tum and Lai Chau (ECCD) and climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction through education (DRR/CCA). The project adopts the multidimensional approach to provide comprehensive support for child development.

After four years of implementation, with the context-adaptive approach, the project has contributed to meet the local parents’ needs and timely support local children in nutrition, healthcare, and disaster risk management.

The model of parent groups in the VWU’s activities has been replicated to 46 provinces and cities, over the Project’s 2021 target of 45. It has also been replicated to non-project sites of Kon Tum and Lai Chau provinces. The Ministry of Education and Training has incorporated 7 early childhood education subjects in its annual training curriculum, ensuring principles of gender mainstreaming and context adaptation. In the project districts, parents and the community have initiated playing grounds, toys and educational items for local children from available materials and ideas to improve the nutrition status of local children under 5.

Speaking at the workshop, VWU Vice President Tran Thi Huong highly appreciated the efforts of the Project Management Team, the technical assistance of Plan Vietnam and the joint efforts of the local authorities, education sector and Women’s Unions of different levels. She also affirmed that the achievements of the project had positively contributed to the effective implementation of the VWU Congress Resolution on child care and protection and the Theme of Safety for women and children.

To further support children’s development, on 2 April, 2021, the VWU and Plan Vietnam launched the project "Vietnamese girl on menstrual hygiene management”, implemented in Quang Binh and Ha Noi from 2020 to 2023. The project goal is to equip girls with necessary knowledge and create favorable conditions for adolescent girls, especially those in ethnic minority areas and remote rural areas to overcome their "menstrual periods" safely and comfortably and to help them make appropriate decisions related to their reproductive health, contributing to ensuring girls' rights and gender equality in health.

The project is expected to directly support 124,000 girls, female teenagers, and women in the community; 27,880 young people, teachers in 40 high, secondary, and primary schools in Hanoi and Quang Binh by equipping them with knowledge about reproductive health and menstrual hygiene. In addition, the project will provide information to 224,000 youth and parents in the community through live media publications, mass media, and community-based communication events.
