Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong elected President of Vietnam

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong was elected President of Vietnam for the 2016-2021 tenure by the National Assembly on Tuesday.

After being elected, President Nguyen Phu Trong swore an oath before the National Assembly: "Under the sacred national flag and before the National Assembly, the people, and voters nationwide, I, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, swear to be absolutely loyal to the nation, the people and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. I will do my best to fulfill all tasks assigned by the Communist Party of Vietnam, the State and the people."

Party leader, President Nguyen Phu Trong was born o­n April 14, 1944 in Dong Anh district, Hanoi. He was a member of the Party Central Committee in the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10thtenures and a Politburo member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12thParty Central Committee and a deputy of the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14thNational Assembly.

Party leader Trong becoming President of Vietnam was received with applause and optimism from Vietnamese people nationwide. Mr. Y Khien Nie of Ea Tam commune, Dak Lak province said: “We’re very happy because the result shows the NA deputies’ trust in a leader who is wholeheartedly devoted to the Party, the State, and the people and aims to boost national industrialization and modernization and achieve the goals of a prosperous people, strong country, equal society and democracy.”

Nguyen Thanh Binh, a war veteran in Vinh Long province, said: “I’m very happy. I believe that the Party leader and President will lead the country and the people to fulfill all tasks assigned by the Party and the State to strengthen national industrialization and modernization and to achieve peace and continued development moving forward.”

Mr. Phan Van Le, a resident in Tien Giang province, said: “We are happy that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has been elected President of Vietnam. The Party leader has done a great job in recent years, especially in his efforts to combat corruption.”

The US diplomatic mission in Hanoi released a statement of US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink congratulating Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong. It said: “On behalf of the United States Mission in Vietnam, I extend my congratulations to Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, o­n the occasion of his assumption of the Presidency.  President Trong’s selection comes at a time when our bilateral ties with Vietnam have never been stronger.  Over the past two decades, the United States and Vietnam have come together to find common purpose based o­n shared interests.  We have expanded our security ties, forged new economic and commercial partnerships, and deepened our personal engagement.  We share a common desire to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. We look forward to continuing to work closely with President Trong’s o­n further strengthening and expanding the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership.”
