At the get-together, two sides have exchanged information on women’s situation of the two countries, especially experiences as well as challenges in the cause for gender equality.
Cuba is the first signatory country and the second ratifying country in the world of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The national organization which was mandated to improve the Cuban women’s role is Cuban Women’s Federation – an organization that has ECOSOC status to the UN. This organization has attracted a membership of more than 4 million women. Cuban women have got many achievements in many fields such as: 63% of female university students, 43,3% female members of the National Assembly, 38% of women in leadership positions….. Especially, the maternity leave for women can last for 1 year.
Speaking at the get-together, Mr. Fredesman Turo Gonzalez- Cuban Ambassador in Vietnam highly appreciated the initiative of the meeting and expressed his high appreciation of the Vietnamese women’s role in the struggle for national independence and development. He affirmed that “We admire the Vietnamese women very much”. on this occasion, the Ambassador also conveyed the thank of Mrs. Yolanda Ferer Gomez, the recently re-elected General Secretary of the Cuban Women’ Federation to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, President of Vietnam Women’s Union for VWU’s valuable support to Cuban Women’s Federation during the last time.
