93.3 percent of rural households access to electricity

By the end of 2006, 93.3 percent of rural households have had access to electricity, while 99 percent of Viet Nam's communes and 92.8 percent of its hamlets were connected with the national power grid, according to figures published on the daily "Lao Dong" (Labour) on Dec. 30.

Preliminary figures released by the Viet Nam General Statistics Office (GSO) also showed that 99.7 percent of the country's communes had primary schools and 53.7 percent of its hamlets had nursery classes.

In addition, 94.4 percent of the communes had access to telephone service and 99.3 percent had clinics.

As many as 9.78 million of the country's households earned their living in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors, 790,000 households lower than 2001 figure, while the number of households operating in the industry and service sectors increased to 3.4 million, up 60 percent over the past five years.
