5 livelihood models supporting women in border areas

On the morning of August 29, the Central Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) and the Vietnam Border Guard Command has co-organized a seminar "Sharing evaluation results and consulting on solutions to improve quality and replicate effective livelihood models for ethnic minority and border areas” in Viet Tri City (Phu Tho).

Attending the seminar were 100 delegates including experts, researchers, representatives of the Women's Union and Border Guards at all levels, and representatives of livelihood models in 26 provinces in the ethnic minorities and mountainous border areas.

Speaking at the seminar, Alternate member of the Party Central Committee, VWU Vice President Ton Ngoc Hanh affirmed: "Over the past years, WUs at all levels have implemented effectively major programs and projects supporting women in economic development, namely Project 939 "Supporting women to start businesses in the period 2017 - 2025"; Program "Supporting women in border areas" in the period 2018-2020 and 2021-2025; 02 National Target Programs for the period 2021-2025 (Sustainable Poverty Reduction; Building New Rural Areas) and Project 8 "Promoting gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" under the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority areas in the period 2021 - 2030; Project No. 01 "Supporting cooperatives managed by women and creating jobs for female workers in the period 2022 - 2030"...

An overview of the seminar

In order to review achievements as well as difficulties, challenges, and map out orientations for the next period, the Central VWU has implemented an evaluation in 26 provinces in the ethnic minorities and mountainous border areas and surveys in 3 provinces of regional representative, including Lang Son, Nghe An and Dak Nong.

As a result, in the period from 2018 in 26 provinces implementing the Program "Supporting women in border areas", 100% of Commune WUs in the ethnic minorities and mountainous border areas have implemented 1,346 livelihood models, with focus on 5 groups: (1) Livelihood support in crop production, animal husbandry/agricultural production; (2) Support access to finance for livelihood development; (3) Livelihood support with maintaining, preserving and promoting traditional culture; (4) Support for startups, business, product consumption, tourism, and livelihoods with the value chain and technology application; (5) Livelihood support through education, vocational training, employment counselling...

In addition, the delegates also shared difficulties, challenges and proposed solutions for the VWU in appropriate intervention activities to improve the quality of livelihood models, thus contributing to ensure women’s voice and their substantive participation in the socio-economic development process in the ethnic minorities and mountainous border areas in the coming years.
