Workshop on Building Law on Gender Equalit

Following the activities of building and completing the draft Law on gender equality, with the assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), on April 15th 2006, the Central Vietnam Women’s Union joined efforts with the Hai Phong Women’s Union to organize a workshop making suggestions for the 7th draft Law on gender equality.

Participants of the workshop were employers, employees and the union representatives of some provincial enterprises: Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Thai Binh and Quang Ninh. The workshop was received well with many participants providing comments and feedback. regarding some regulations in the draft. Comments and feedback related directly to enterprises such as: the retirement age of female labor, granting a leave of absence for husbands to take care of a delivering wife and newly born baby, policy o­n business start up support for women, policy o­n supporting female labor intensive enterprises, State management agency o­n gender equality to name a few.

Especially with the regulation of the retirement age, granting a leave of absence for husbands to take care of a delivering wife and newly born baby, most participants agreed o­n the same retirement age of female labor as that of a male labor. A female labor is allowed to take early retirement from 1 to 5 years without deducting a certain percentage, and the government also has specific regulations towards some particular professions. Participants advocated and saw the advancement and practicality of the regulation of granting a leave of absence for husbands to take care of a delivering wife and newly born baby. o­n o­ne hand, this regulation helps men exercise the right to take care of his wife and children and share family responsibilities with women. o­n the other hand, it is an indirect factor to raise the competitiveness of women in the labor market./.
