Recently, he has led the UN support for Vietnam’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 and its non-permanent UN Security Council roles (2020-2021) as well as Vietnam’s participation in UN peace keeping operations and contribution to advancing the global agenda on women, peace and security.

From January 2017 until now, Mr. Kamal Malhotra has made strong commitments and actively contributed to the country’s development as well as the cause of gender equality and women’s development in Vietnam. Among them, the most significant contribution is his leading role in the finalization of two UN-Government of Vietnam Cooperation Frameworks, the One Strategic Plan (2017-2021) and now the UN-Government of Vietnam Sustainable Development Goals Cooperation Framework (2022-2026). Gender equality goals are cross-cutting in these two strategic plans.

As the UN head in Vietnam, he has paid due attention to promote cooperation between the VWU and such UN agencies as UN Women, UNDP, UNICEF, ILO, IOM… through initiatives to mainstream gender equality into national target programs on new rural development and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. In addition, there have been many cooperation projects on gender-based violence prevention and control, women's economic empowerment, climate change response, female leadership, safety for female migrant workers, and support for vulnerable women groups (women with HIV, women facing difficulties in the COVID-19 context...), promotion and protection of children's rights, etc.

The UN in Vietnam also actively cooperated with the VWU to successfully host meaningful events such as the Launching Ceremony of "Safety Year for Women and Children" (2019); Forum “Promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals from a gender perspective” (2021) and many other conferences and seminars related to women, gender and development.

The UN also plays an important role in connecting the VWU with other international partners through inviting VWU’s President to share at meetings of the Informal Ambassadors and Heads of Agencies Gender Policy Coordination Group and invite VWU representatives attend many international conferences and training courses to improve capacity, connect and share experiences.

Mr. Kamal Malhotra expressed his gratitude for the attention and recognition of the VWU. He highly appreciated the VWU’s role in promoting gender equality, women’s economic empowerment and women’s participation in politics with the proportion of women deputies to the National Assembly this term of 30.26%. He wished that there would be more Vietnamese women at leading positions in the National Assembly and the Government... With his expertise and experience in the UN and in Vietnam, Mr. Kamal is expected to have further support to Vietnam and its people, including the VWU.
