VNGO significantly contributes to implementing MDGs

06/12/2006
Vietnam’s non-governmental organisations (VNGO) group has made significant contributions to implementing the millennium development goals (MDGs), including hunger and poverty reduction, gender equality, sustainable environment, education, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS control.

The remark was made by Nguyen Thi Hoai Duc, head of the VNGO Executive Board, at a meeting in Hanoi on December 2 to review VNGO performance in 2006.

She noted that the group has expanded its activities throughout the country, especially in rural, mountainous and remote areas since its establishment in 2001. Many of VNGO members have actively involved in tackling social issues such as fighting against family violence, supporting victims of human trafficking cases and providing information about reproductive health and safe maternity for teenagers and adolescents.

Besides joining technical groups or networks in the region and the world, VNGO has cooperated with various universities in Sweden and the US. It has built several effective community approach models in reproductive health, such as the "Father and Son" or "Mother and Daughter" clubs.
