The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) praised Viet Nam for its efforts to finalise its legal system in matters related to women, said Chairwoman of the Viet Nam National Committee for the Advancement of Women (VNNCAW) Ha Thi Khiet.

Chairwoman Khiet told the press about the results of defending Viet Nam's fifth and sixth national reports on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination at the United Nations headquarters on Jan. 17.

The reports reaffirmed the Vietnamese Party and State's consistent policies on gender equality and women's advancement with the country's National Assembly's passage of the Law on Gender Equality describing fundamental principles and provisions of the convention.

The Vietnamese delegation's direct dialogue with CEDAW has reflected Viet Nam's dedicated implementation of CEDAW as well as challenges to the country in ensuring gender equality, added Khiet, who is also Chairwoman of the Viet Nam Women's Union.

Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the VNNCAW Tran Thi Mai Huong said that CEDAW will soon send its conclusive report to Viet Nam.

She said that CEDAW experts praised Viet Nam's achievements and efforts in considerably raising its index of gender equality and women's advancement in various domains.

They also showed their keen interest in seeking special temporary solutions to eradicate preconceived ideas on gender in families and society; ethnic minority women; gender equality in education, labour and jobs as well as solutions for women trafficking and ill-treatment, prostitution and other pressing issues, she added.
