Thanh Lam and RoK orchestra perform to welcome APEC meeting

03/11/2006
The 40-piece National Orchestra of the Republic of Korea (RoK) will perform at the Hanoi Opera House on November 3 in a concert with Vietnamese pop singer, Thanh Lam, to salute the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.

The performance will open with shinnaerim, a prayer originating in the RoK's Kyunggi-do province, that will ask for the success of APEC Vietnam 2006 and bring luck to the audience.

The RoK musicians will use traditional Korean instruments including the haegum (a two-stringed fiddle), the kayagum (a 12-stringed instrument) and the Korean traditional percussion samulnori.

Using these instruments, the musicians will perform a southern Vietnam folk song, Ly Ngua O, in addition to a classical piece, Spring, from Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

The audience will also have a chance to hear the song from the TV drama, Dae Chang-kum, that ran in Vietnam last year.

Thanh Lam will sing the Vietnamese song Nang Len (The Sun Rises) and a popular Korean song.

The RoK embassy expects the concert to spur further exchange of culture and fine arts between the two countries.

The concert is being held by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture and Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Trade, as well as the RoK Embassy in Vietnam
