Take Back the Night – A Night to End Violence Against Women
At “Take Back the Night”, the women organize many events. Typically, there is a march followed by a speeches and candlelight vigils on violence against women. This event is often deliberately women only, to symbolize that women can fight against sexual assault. Women are often told to be extra careful when going out at night. In some parts of the world, women today are still not allowed to be out at night. The march is to raise awareness to the community that women should be able to walk freely at night, without the fear of violence. Women in this march are taking back what should be theirs.
Following the march, survivors and rape crisis workers, as well as other women in the community, prepare speeches to tell their stories. It is important that women raise their voices about the issue of violence against women. It is important that their stories be heard. Women are there to support each other and fight together in the struggle to end violence against women. The candlelight vigils are for the women that have lost their lives due to violence against women. Women can come up and tell stories of their loved ones who have lost their lives. Hearing the stories of the women who have been abused and how they have found peace in their lives can be very empowering.
Women from all different walks of life attend this event. There will be survivors of violence, children who have been abused, family of women who have been abused, etc. Any woman is able to come and show her respect and support on this crucial issue. For the women who have been victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse, this is a way for them to speak out and seize what was taken from them.
