Generally, a tester must be proficient in at least one programming language and have basic knowledge about software testing. The skills of analysis, design, programming and the knowledge about application fields are also very necessary. Tester also needs to have a certain degree of English in order to write and understand specialist documents.

According to the standard, the proportion of testers to programmers should be 1:5, which means a tester will work with 5 programmers.
