Software Testing – An Attractive Career for Women

17/07/2006
In most of software companies, the number of women in charge of Quality Control Engineer _QCE or testing software is often higher than men.

This career is quite popular in Vietnam, especially attracting girl students on job-days relating to software human resources. In FPT Software Company, approximately 90% of the testers are women.

Quality control is a critical part; a perfect product of high quality will enhance the reputation of company. Therefore, the role of the tester is an integral part to any software company.

Generally, a tester must be proficient in at least one programming language and have basic knowledge about software testing. The skills of analysis, design, programming and the knowledge about application fields are also very necessary. Tester also needs to have a certain degree of English in order to write and understand specialist documents.

“This job is rather attractive as there are challenges as well as opportunities to enhance knowledge” – tester Do Thi Thu Huong commented.

According to the standard, the proportion of testers to programmers should be 1:5, which means a tester will work with 5 programmers. Sometimes this proportion is higher, up to 1:3 depending on the project. While students graduated from information technology have had difficulties finding a job, software companies are often “thirsty” for manpower.

“We often have demand of tester recruitment. However, the rate of suitable applicants is only 10% as the students who are fresh from university do not know the concepts and lack information about this career”, Mr. Nguyen Duc Hong, Deputy Managing Director in charge of the Testing Service department of the Global Cybersoft company said.

Finding a bug is more difficult than making bug. Hence, tester must be precise and sharp in special situations. Normally, the role of the tester is more general than that of a programmer. An excellent tester will work quite leisurely while the effect of his work is relatively high. This job can be evaluated based on the number of bugs found per hour or per day, serious bugs found and the proportion of bugs found beforeinstalling software must be over 85%…

“Testing seems to be a light piece of work compared with programming. However, it also has pressures. If there is a bug in a program, the tester will be the first who has responsibility for it”. Mrs. Nguyen Khanh Le, software testing engineer at PSV Company (HCMC) said.

Opportunities and challenges, breaking through or lagging behind are now common questions to the women in the age of information.
