Work starts on hospital in memory martyr-doctor Dang Thuy Tram

HCM City’s Tuoi Tre newspaper and central Quang Ngai Province Friday broke ground on construction of a VND6 billion (US$377,000) hospital, named after war martyr and hero, Dr Dang Thuy Tram.

The Dang Thuy Tram Hospital will be built o­n a 4,100 sq.m site in the Pho Cuong Commune – site of the medical station the heroic young doctor provided health care for locals and wounded during the American war.


The funds to construct the hospital were contributed by readers of the Tuoi Tre newspaper, the publication that originally printed excerpts of Tram’s diary, kept during the escalation of the war (1968-72).


The diary was retrieved in a raid by enemy forces, kept by an American soldier for 35 years, and then returned to her family under the fanfare of the international press.


The new health facility comprises of a 1.100 sq.m health treatment area, complete with a park and a showroom to present exhibits related to life and revolutionary activities of heroic doctor.

The construction is scheduled to complete in August this year.


Also o­n the day the Hanoi Youth Union launched a cultural house worth VND100 million ($6,282) in the Hanoi’s outskirts of Tu Liem District.


The cultural house is dedicated to another war martyr, Nguyen Van Thac and was built in his homeland - Dong Village, a venue for cultural activities for Tu Liem District youth union members.

Investment for the house was raised by the Hanoi youth union members.


Dang Thuy Tram and Nguyen Van Thac, both in service during the American war had their carefully kept diaries published into books that became best sellers in Vietnam, selling thousands of copies in 2005.
