The Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry will organize the 2010 National Women's Week from March 3-8. Dien Dan Doanh Nghiep (Entrepreneur Forum) speaks with chairwoman of the VCCI's Viet Nam Businesswomen Council Tran Thi Thuy about the event.

What is the point of the 2010 National Women's Week?

The event aims to honor high-achieving Vietnamese women who have excelled in production and trade, contributing to socio-economic development and accelerating the nation's drive towards industrialization and modernization.

This is the first time that Viet Nam has organized a national women's week. What will the event consist of?

As many important events are being organized this year, this will also provide an opportunity to promote the traditional spirit of female workers throughout the world and review the glorious history of Vietnamese women.

The week will also promote the image of Viet Nam and its people to the world, attract investment, and speed up trade, tourism and expand international co-operation.

What do you think about the role of businesswomen in the society today compared with the past?

The role of women in the economy has become increasingly clear no matter their career is.

Many enterprises managed by women employ thousands of workers and have contributed billions of dong to the State budget. They are gradually affirming their position domestically and internationally.

Many businesswomen have donated several billion dong to help Vietnamese heroic mothers, invalids and family members of martyrs, poor families and people in difficult circumstances.

How have Vietnamese businesswomen overcome last year's economic crisis?

Despite the impact of last year's world economic crisis, a VCCI survey found about 90 per cent of enterprises retained stable production, over 51 per cent continued to invest in expanding operations.

Presently, about 30 per cent of nearly 350,000 enterprises are owned by businesswomen. Most of them are medium and small enterprises. Many have recovered from last year's difficulties thanks to the policy of "cut your coat according to your cloth" initiated by these businesswomen. Some enterprises even achieved high growth.

These successes will be highlighted at the 2010 National Women's Week, with the event providing the opportunity for businesswomen to share their experiences.

One among several very important activities of the week will be the awarding of the 2009 Golden Rose Cup. What is different about the prize this year?

The Golden Rose Cup was founded in 2005. This prestigious prize is recognized both internationally and domestically. As many as 100 businesswomen will be awarded the prize this year. Top female Party and Government leaders will also be honored during the event. — VNS
