Female-headed households are transitioning to Taiwan's high income groups, and the gap in disposable income between male- and female-headed households is gradually closing, according to the Taiwan Department of Accounts and Statistics. This was one of the conclusions reached on Monday at the 3rd Meeting of the Executive Yuan Ad Hoc Group for Improving Income Distribution presided by vice premiere of Taiwan's Executive Yuan Chen Chong.

Chen called at the meeting for policies on women's employment and entrepreneurship to improve their incomes. The island province's Department of Accounts and Statistics is to strengthen and publish gender analyses of income distribution, thus providing a reference point for government policies on gender equality.

The Taiwan Ministry of the Interior has begun disbursing child care subsidies of 3,000 yuan (US$ 441.2) to families with a gross annual income of TWD 1.5 mln (US$ 49, 3178). Single parent families will receive an additional 5,000 yuan (US$ 735.3) for each child under two-years-old. Limits on child care subsidies to households on a total annual household income of less than TWD 1.5 mln (US$49,3178) with three or more children are to be removed in 2011.

Chen added that the Ministry of Finance will do research on systems of taxation that maximize income distribution, and will launch a tax review with the aim of working out equitable tax measures.
