Vietnam Women’s Union and Cambodian Women for Peace and Development Association promote cooperation

From June 16th to 19th, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) received a 8-member delegation of the Cambodian Women for Peace and Development Association (CWPD) headed by Mme. Men Sam An, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, CWPD President.

On the morning of June 17th, at VWU headquarters, President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa had a cordial meeting with the delegation.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed cooperation results between the two organizations made under the Cooperation Agreement for 2013-2017 period at both central and local levels and the future plan, especially training in Vietnam for Cambodian female staff and cooperation in international fora.
Mme. Thanh Hoa expressed the VWU’s respects to the relationship of good neighbor, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and sustainability between Vietnam and Cambodia, and expected that the Government of Cambodia and CWPD would further support the overseas Vietnamese people including women in Cambodia to have a more stable life. President Thanh Hoa informed the delegation about the China’s illegal placement of its oil rig in Vietnam’s territorial waters in the East Sea and its heartless actions against Vietnam’s legal enforcement forces and Vietnam fishermen in this area, and called for the support of Cambodian women to protect justice, international law and peace.

Mme. Men Sam An expressed her sincere thanks to the Government and People of Vietnam for their support to the Cambodian People’s Amy to put an end to the Pol Pot regime and to reconstruct a Cambodian country of peace and stability, affirming that the development of Cambodia is inseparable from the priceless support by the Party, State and People of Vietnam. She highly appreciated the VWU support to CWPD, particularly support in training for Cambodian female staff. Regarding the China’s illegal placement of its oil rig in Vietnam’s territorial waters, Mme. Men Sam An expressed her desire to see the Vietnamese women and people living in peace, stability and development, expecting the dispute to be settled soon through peaceful measures complying with international law. She affirmed this is the desire of the people and women of Cambodia.

         After the meeting, at VWU headquarters, the two sides attended the workshop “Women’s situation in Vietnam and Cambodia, and activities of VWU and CWPD”. The workshop provided insights about the background, structure and main activities of the two organizations as well as the women’s significant contribution in all areas in Vietnam and Cambodia. Though different in institutional structure, both organizations share the goal of advancing women’s development. Also, they both enjoy strong support by the respective Party and Government as well as the active participation by respective women.

During a field trip to Ninh Binh province, the delegates were keen to learn about activities of the local Women’s Unions, particularly the movement of building “a family of 5-withouts and 3-cleans” and microcredit activities. To the efficiency of these activities, Mme. Men Sam An asked the VWU to help organize a study visit in Vietnamese southern provinces bordering Cambodia so that CWPD staff could learn more about VWU microcredit and poverty alleviation experience.

On behalf of the Party and State’s leaders, Mr. Le Hong Anh, member of the Politbureau, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam praised the two organizations for their feasible cooperation activities. He supported the two organizations to strengthen multifaceted cooperation and reminded the two to be more focused o­n communicating and educating respective women, particularly the young, to respect and promote the solidarity, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia.

While in Vietnam, the delegation paid a tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum, visited Mr. Le Kha Phieu, former General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, met with Mr. Vu Mao, Chairman of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association, and toured the Vietnam Women’s Museum.

The delegation expressed their sincere thanks to the VWU’s hospitality. The visit was highly successful, opening up new cooperation activities between the two organizations.
