In reaction to China’s illegal placement of Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig in the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of Vietnam, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU), as a representative of its members and women in the country, issued on May 13th 2014 a Statement in protest against China’s wrongdoing. The statement in Vietnamese and foreign languages was posted on the VWU’s newspaper and website, and sent to Vietnamese and foreign media agencies, VWU partners, international friends and overseas Vietnamese women.

In this context, the VWU of different levels has organized many practical activities towards the nation’s seas and islands. Together with representatives from sectors and branches, the VWU’s leaders have visited and presented gifts to families of fishermen, fishery surveillance officers, coast guards and soldiers on duty, thus encouraging them to be more persistent and determined in protecting the nation’s sea and island sovereignty. The movement "Joining efforts for the nation’s seas and islands" launched by the VWU attracted active participation and contribution by VWU members and women throughout the country, and a remarkable fund has been set up to support the Vietnamese forces on the sea.

Quang Ngai provincial Women’s Union launched the program “Quang Ngai women join efforts in protecting national sea and island sovereignty” in Ly Son island district with a number of activities including disseminating information about the sea and island issues, presenting affection houses to VWU poor members, giving gifts to fishermen’ families, granting scholarships to studious pupils - children of offshore fishermen, and cultural performance on the seas and islands…

These activities have actively contributed to raising people and women’s awareness on the national sea and island issues, and motivating women to provide greater care and support to families of military officers and soldiers on duty to protect the national sea and island sovereignty.
