Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and Vietnam Women’s Union: To bring benefits to female workers
Attending the signing ceremony were VGCL President Mr. Bui Van Cuong, VWU President Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, and other leaders of the 2 organizations.
Following previous periods, over the past 5 years, the two organizations have had active cooperation in reviewing and giving inputs to legal documents related to female workers. Particularly their successful proposals include the increase of female workers’ maternity leave from 4 months to 6 months and policies for female civil servants at the communal level.
The VGCL has been drafting and finalizing the Resolution on women's affairs divisions in non-state owned enterprises in order to help improve the quality of trade union activities in the non-state owned sector and attract more female workers to join the union. The women’s affairs divisions have recommended the trade union units to negotiate with the employer and include in regulations and collective labor agreements the contents beneficial to women workers.
Special attention has been given to daycare services for children of workers in industrial zones, especially since the Prime Minister approved the project "Investment in the construction Trade Union mechanisms, including houses, kindergartens, supermarkets, venues of cultural and sports activities, legal consultancy; drug store and health facilities for workers, Trade unionmembers, and female workers in industrial and export processing zones”.
As part of the project "Development and support of independent and private daycare groups in industrial and export processing zones up to 2020", in many provinces the Trade Union in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training and the Women’s Union have conducted surveys on the situation of children and kindergartens in industrial and processing zones, provided communication and counseling on childcare, mobilized enterprises to contribute toys and learning tools, organized communication on safe motherhood and breastfeeding in the enterprises with a large number of female workers, and included the support for workers having kindergarten-age children in the collective labor agreements.
The movements of "Good labor", "creative labor", emulation "Being good at both social and family affairs" launched by the VGCL have been closely sided with the VWU-launched movement "Women are active and creative in studying, working, and building happy families” and the campaign of building “5 withouts” and 3 cleans” households. Over the years, many female cadres, civil servants and employees have been honored with the Vietnam Women's Award, the National Award for Exemplary Women, the Vietnam Women Prize, the Kovalevskaia Award, certificates of the Women's Innovation Day, Merit Medals for the Development of Vietnamese Women, etc.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Bui Van Cuong and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha agreed that in the coming time, the two organizations should focus their cooperation on ensuring legitimate rights and interests of workers, including female workers and particularly women over 35 years old in the textile and garment industry. Annual evaluation and review will be carried out to draw lessons and attention will be given to staff training so as they can accomplish well the task of caring for workers.
