The Atlantic Philanthropies Fund has committed nearly US$ 5.4 million in aid to help Vietnam build a dioxin laboratory following an agreement signed with the General Department of Environment under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment yesterday

.The international-standard lab will also be active in studying and mitigating the consequences from other organic substances that damage the environment.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Xuan Truong said conducting research on left-over chemical residues and the devastating effect dioxin had had on the environment and Vietnam’s people had been an urgent task and a top priority for years.

Vietnam would create favorable conditions for organizations and individuals to join efforts to mitigate the consequences of AO/dioxin, he said. US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak affirmed his wish to boost co-operation with Vietnam concerning dioxin and other environmental issues.

Construction of the dioxin lab would help raise Vietnam’s capacity to analyse dioxin to evaluate toxic levels in the air, land and water, as well as its environmental management capacity, the diplomat said.
