To share information about women and gender equality, a workshop was held by the Presidium of the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) on 14 January, 2015 in Hanoi with the participation of VWU leaders, VWU Scientific Council members, heads of VWU departments and units, representatives of some ministries, agencies, academies and VWU collaborators in scientific research activities. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa, VWU President, Chairwoman of VWU Scientific Council chaired the workshop.

At the workshop, participants focused on discussing the situation of young women, women entrepreneurs, women – violence victims and problems faced by women in general and women workers in particular in the context of the ASEAN regional integration.

Regarding young women, besides their positive points such as improved professional skills, educational levels, strong desire for career development, certain issues still exist among this group which need to be paid more attention to such as their spiritual life, employment, living ideology, such marriage and family tendencies as single motherhood, cohabitation, test marriage etc.

Regarding women – violence victims, despite a decrease in reported cases for the period 2012-2014, violence against women still exists in many families in different forms and due to various causes. The method of collecting statistical figures and data on domestic violence needs to be improved in some localities.

Women entrepreneurs have made contributions to national GDP growth, creating jobs for many people including women. The international integration, particularly the ASEAN Economic Community would bring both opportunities and challenges to women entrepreneurs which require them to improve business competitiveness in terms of finance, technology, business management skills...

The participants analyzed the efforts for women’s advancement and gender equality made by the Party, Government and mass organizations so far, compared the situation of Vietnam with other countries in the region and the world, and suggested solutions to the mentioned problems including awareness raising for women and the society. Representatives from other agencies and organizations expressed their support and willingness to join VWU activities for women and gender equality.

Speaking at the workshop, VWU President Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa informed the participants about VWU efforts in supporting women, thus contributing to achieving gender equality goal, with a focus on poverty reduction, formulation of laws and policies related to women and gender equality and supervision of their enforcement. She affirmed that the presentations and ideas given at this workshop are good suggestions for VWU activities in the time to come and promised that the VWU would organize similar workshops for further exchanging practical and scientific information on women and gender equality in order to better implement the VWU’s representation roles.
