Scholarships awarded to honour Vietnamese Women’s Day (dantri website)

The awarding ceremony was held in Hanoi o­n October 19 to celebrate the occasion of Vietnamese Women’s Day o­n October 20. 

The winners are Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh from the Institute for Tropical Technology, Dr. Doan Thi Mai Huong from Institute of Marine Biochemistry under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Dr. Nguyen Thi Van Anh, a lecturer from Hanoi University of Natural Science.

Launched in 1998, the L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science is the cooperation between the L'Oreal Group and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). It is aimed to heighten the position of women in science by recognising outstanding female researchers for great contributions to scientific development.

The award was first granted to Vietnamese women in 2008. From 2011, the individual scholarship for Vietnamese women will be raised to VND200 million.

 Dr. Thanh’s research is about Nanostructured materials with high capacity of electrochemical catalysis to process toxic organic compounds in the paper production industry.

Dr. Huong conducted a research named “Detecting active biological mixtures from two species of Macaranga branch under the Euphorbiaceae family in Vietnam”. These mixtures can help prevent cancers, oxidisation and microorganism.

Dr. Anh focuses o­n an idea to find out active elements which help bring medicines to cancer cells. Many researches o­n this topic have been conducted in foreign countries, but it is still new in Vietnam where sees a high rate of cancer patients.
