Promoting gender equality and women’s status of Vietnam and Côte d’Ivoire

On May 6th, Ms. Tran Lan Phuong, Vice President of Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) hosted a courtesy reception for a delegation from the Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP), the ruling Party of Côte d’Ivoire on a working visit to Vietnam.

The delegation, led by Sahy Claude Soumahoro, member of the RHDP's Executive Committee and Deputy-General Secretary in charge of communication and external relations, is on the first visit to Vietnam on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.

At the meeting, Ms. Lan Phuong warmly welcomed the delegates at the VWU headquarter and shared the delegation about the functions and tasks of VWU as well as its key activities in the last time, including the VWU’s involvement in three National target programs and Government projects to promote gender equality, enhance women’s status and support women's economic empowerment.

She proudly informed that thanks to the attention and direction of the CPV and State and the coordination of ministries, sectors together with WU’s contribution at all levels, Vietnam’s world ranking in gender equality increased from 83rd in 2022 to 72nd out of a total of 146 countries in 2023. The political field has also witnessed Vietnam’s remarkable achievement in gender equality. Accordingly, Vietnam increased 27 places from 106th (2022) to 89th position (2023) and the rate of women’s political participation ranked 53rd.

Sincerely thank the warm and thoughtful welcome of VWU’s leaders, with traditions of friendship and good relationship between the two countries for many years, Mr. Sahy Claude Soumahoro highly valued the solidarity and friendship of the Party, people, and women of Vietnam with those of Côte d’Ivoire.

Ms. Kouame Badou Harlette, President of the RHDP Women's Union, expressed her admiration for Vietnam's achievements in gender equality, especially the rate of women’s political participation in Vietnam. She also shared that Côte D’Ivoire has had its first female Ministers and seen an continuous increase in the proportion of women holding management and leadership positions. In the RHDP Party, women make up about 40%. The Party established a fund for supporting women, trained women’s capacity in politics and ensured that the rate of women holding the position of Chairman of People's Councils at all levels reached 30%.

At the meeting, Ms. Tran Lan Phuong and Ms. Kouame Badou Harlette expressed their expectation for cooperation and exchanges between the two countries in the coming time to support women in all fields, thereby further deepening the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two sides for benefits of people and women of the two nations.
