Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom (Uganda) visits Vietnam Women’s Union

The delegation of the Tooro Kingdom (Uganda) headed by Prime Minister Mr. Stephen Kaliba paid a working visit to the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) during his stay in Vietnam for accompanying the King and Queen of Tooro Kingdom to the 11th UN Vesak 2014 in Ninh Binh province. Receiving the delegation at the Vietnam Women’s Museum were Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, VWU’s Vice President and representatives of the Museum and International Relations Department of the VWU.

Visiting the Vietnam Women’s Museum, the delegation showed high appreciation of the professionalism in the construction and development a gendered museum having the functions of research, preservation, protection and display of tangible and intangible historical and cultural heritages o­n Vietnamese women and their roles during the wartime as well as in the national construction and development.

After the visit, the delegation had a working session with the VWU. Vice President Nguyen Thi Tuyet warmly welcomed the delegation and briefly introduced about the VWU’s structure and its diversified activities to promote Vietnamese women’s development.

Speaking at the meeting, the Tooro Kingdom’s Prime Minister expressed his happiness and honor with hospitality extended to the delegation by VWU. He was strongly impressed with the VWU network from central to grassroots level as well as the Union’s practical activities to help women in poverty reduction and comprehensive development.He also expressed his appreciation of the roles of Vietnamese women in general and the VWU in particular in the national defense and construction. In addition, the delegation also shared information about women in Tooro. Accordingly, Tooro is an agriculture-based kingdom where women are a major part of the labor force. Tooro has implemented programs to empower women economically, politically and socially, thus contributing to the national socio-economic development. Currently, the Queen of Tooro Kingdom is President of the African Queens and Women Cultural Leaders Network (AQWCLN). The mission of this network is to improve the lives of women and children, particularly girls through strengthening their access to quality education and health care; promoting women’s economic empowerment and leadership; promoting cultural values; supporting efforts to reduce poverty, and promotingfood security and peace... in Africa. AQWCLN works in partnerships with the African Union, Regional Economic Communities and is supported by the United Nations and other partners. Tooro Prime Minister showed his hope for future co-operation, exchange and sharing of experiences between AQWCLN and VWU aiming for women’s development. o­n this occasion, he also extended to VWU an invitation of visiting Tooro Kingdom in the near future.

 

On behalf of the Vietnam Women’s Union, Vice President Nguyen Thi Tuyet expressed sincere thanks to the Prime Minister as well as the delegation for the invitation and showed the willingness to cooperate and share with AQWCLN experiences in activities for women’s advancement. She wished the Tooro delegation successful attendance at UN Vesak 2014 in Ninh Binh province.
