Improving women’s knowledge about breast cancer

01/08/2014
On the morning of July 18th, in Hanoi, Vietnam Women's Union reviewed the implementation of a project on breast cancer awareness-raising and prevention in Northern Vietnam.

The workshop was chaired by VWU Vice president Tran Thi Huong with the participation of representatives from the Peoples’ Hope Japan (PHJ) and 5 provincial Women's Unions implementing the project.

Speaking at the workshop, VWU Vice President Tran Thi Huong appreciated the humane values of the project. Through training and guidance on breast self-examination, early detection of tumors, lumps and abnormal symptoms, the project helps raise women’s awareness on breast cancer, facilitating early treatment and early diagnosis.

For the first 6 months of 2014, 1,672 women received guidance on breast cancer and breast self-examination; a dozen of patients were referred to hospitals for testing.

Sharing project experiences, a representative from Hai Phong said before the project started, some women found their tumors but did not know where to get examination and testing. Those women have been benefiting from the project’s referral activities.

A representative from Nam Dinh WU proposed for more breast models to facilitate visual instructions of breast self-examination.

The VWU President appreciated all contributions by the participants which are inputs for project planning in the next period.

The project in 2014 targets to train 5,000 women in 5 provinces on breast cancer and breast self-examination
