Human rights promotion helps Vietnam grow

The State of Vietnam considers the protection and promotion of human rights is beneficial to sustainable development and national modernisation, a senior human rights researcher said.

Dr Nguyen Duc Tri, director of the Human Rights Research Institute, made the statement on March 25 at a symposium on operations of the UN committees for Human Rights Convention and Vietnam’s implementation of human rights treaties.

“Almost all basic and common human rights and freedoms outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other treaties have been institutionalised in Vietnamese law,” the senior official said.

In the presence of Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam Hubert Lebel, scientists and representatives of international organisations in Vietnam, Dr Tri said the country had signed almost all UN conventions on human rights and implemented international treaties on human rights.

Upholding its commitments to defending and executing human rights in line with international standards, the country has spared no efforts in completing its legal system, Dr Tri told the symposium.

The work also includes supplementing and issuing documents related to human rights, and screening and revising legislation that no longer conforms with international human right treaties, he said.
