Gender equality in ethnic minorities and mountainous areas promoted

After five years of implementation, Project No.8 has completed four groups of key activities; 8 out of 9 core targets have been achieved and exceeded the plan for the period, of which four targets have exceeded the plan, including: Community communication team; Trusted address; “Leader of change” club; Capacity building for female ethnic minority cadres.
An overview of the workshop

On May 31, in Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Women's Union held a workshop to consult, contribute ideas to complete, propose contents and solutions for Project No.8 on implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children in the National Target Programme on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas, Phase II for the 2026-2030 period.

The project’s models and activities have created positive changes in awareness, changing the “thinking and working style” of people in particularly difficult communes and villages, contributing to the locality’s effective resolution of several urgent issues for women and children and promoting gender equality in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

In her opening speech at the workshop, Vice President of the Viet Nam Women’s Union Nguyen Thi Minh Huong stated that despite certain achievements, women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas are still facing many gender issues that need further attention, such as: employment, livelihood, health care, education, participation in digital transformation and access to information; persistent social issues, such as: early marriage, consanguineous marriage, cross-border trafficking of women and children, and domestic violence that is still common in some ethnic minorities; issues of family education, parenting education.

The implementation of gender mainstreaming and the participation of Women’s Unions at all levels in promoting gender equality in the areas of the National Target Programme on Socio-Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, Phase I, is still limited.

The Vice President of the Viet Nam Women’s Union said that the workshop was organised to collect opinions on the draft Proposal on contents and solutions to participate in the implementation of the National Target Programme on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, for the 2026-2030 period.

The draft was developed based on promoting the achieved results, ensuring the sustainability of the models and activities implemented in the 2021-2025 period; at the same time, proposing solutions to solve several urgent social issues arising in the new context that are affecting and affecting the opportunities to access and enjoy the development achievements of women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

At the workshop, delegates proposed to continue the contents and solutions to implement the goal of gender equality and focus on effectively solving several urgent social issues for women and children in ethnic minority areas in the new context.
