For a Vietnam without human trafficking and domestic violence

22/07/2013
On 24th May 2013 in Hanoi the Centre for Women and Development organized a workshop with service providers for the Peace House. The workshop attracted a large number of the representatives from the Ministries of Health, Justice, and Police, the Border Guard and others national and international organizations

Opened in 2007 by the Centre for Women and Development (CWD) of the Vietnam Women´s Union, the Peace House has been supporting the vulnerable women and children who are survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. For the last 5 years, the Peace House has supported 241 human trafficking survivors and 348 domestic violence victims. Children accounted for 28.5% of the total. At the moment, the Peace House is sheltering 17 domestic violence and 20 human trafficking survivors. In the Peace House, the victims receive a comprehensive package, including accommodation, counseling, medical care, legal support, vocational training, job support, entertainment, life skill training and physical development, equipment and loan support for starting a business, etc.

According to Ms. Cao Thi Hong Van, CWD Director, in her opening speech, the comprehensive package depends on the active collaboration of functional and relevant agencies and the support from the local and international organizations. This linkage system over the past years has been very beneficial for the Peace House’s operation and it’s becoming a reliable address for many victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. The workshop is an annual event to assess the Peace House’s operation, its difficulties, and find out practical activities and solutions for the near future.

At the workshop, after the CWD report on the Peace House´s activities, presentations were made by the Ministry of Heath on its intervention and support for gender-based violence victims, the Association for Legal Assistant on legal support for gender-based violence, and the REACH on vocational training for gender-based violence victims.

Participants discussed about the difficulties and limitations facing by the Peace House, and proposed solutions to improve its operation in the future.
