Escaping poverty through the traditional bamboo and rattan weaving craft

Born into a disadvantaged family, losing her mother at an early age while her father was often ill, Ms. Huệ soon became the family’s breadwinner. Witnessing poverty surrounding her life, she was determined to find a new path. With skillful hands and a deep love for the traditional bamboo and rattan weaving craft, she and her husband started their business with modest capital, accessed through the WU’s support from a loan provided by the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies, amounting to 40 million VND (equivalent to about 1500 USD).
Many women gain jobs and stable incomes from Ms. Huệ’s workshop
Not only focusing on improving her own family’s livelihood, Ms. Huệ also wishes to spread the traditional craft and create jobs for local women. She established a bamboo and rattan weaving product consumption cooperative group, ensuring stable market access for the products. At the same time, she provides raw materials and technical guidance for women both inside and outside the commune, helping them earn additional income during their free time.
Thanks to her efforts, the cooperative group has created regular jobs for 50 women, with a monthly income ranging from 4 to 6 million VND per person, contributing to poverty reduction among women members. In addition, she has provided seasonal employment for over 200 female workers in the commune and neighboring areas.
Beyond her business success, Ms. Huệ actively participates in activities of the Women’s Union Branch and in emulation movements launched by the Women’s Union at different levels and the local authorities. During meetings, she often shares her experience, encourages other women to work diligently, and engages in activities to support disadvantaged women members.
She is a role model of creativity and perseverance in striving for legitimate prosperity, making an important contribution to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values. At the same time, she produces high-value products that meet market demands. Her achievements in poverty reduction and economic development serve as an inspiration to women in Phú Thọ Province, affirming the role and position of women in socio-economic development.
