Awards ceremony held for education donors

Almost 300 foreign and domestic enterprises and individuals were honored for their contribution of over VND 900 billion (US $56.25 million) and over 1.5 million square meters of land to educational programs in the country since 1990.

Speaking at the June 5 awards ceremony; State President Nguyen Minh Triet said, “it’s good for the Ministry of Education to hold the event in recognition of the contributions made by kind-hearted enterprises and individuals, both at home and abroad, to the national cause of education and training”.

 

The President also pledged increased State budgets for education, especially in infrastructure and in improving teacher quality to meet the ministry’s decade-end strategy.

 

“Organizations, individuals and the entire society should join hands with the Government in this area and their contributions will play a very important role”, said the State leader.

 

The award ceremony also proved to be a boon for education in the country as five companies took the opportunity to donate VND 17.7 billion and 1,060computers to schools in Vietnam.

 

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group granted VND 10 billion to build a secondary school in the southern province of Ca Mau. Intel-Vietnam and Indochina presented 1,060 computers to primary and secondary schools and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam committed VND 500 million for the construction ò a remote primary school in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.

 

Other donors include the Saigon Industrial and Commerce Joint stock Bank with VND 4.2 billion for the construction of a junior secondary school in the Central Highlands and dairy producer Vinamilk came in with VND 3 billion in scholarships for primary school students.

 

The Ministry of Education and Training then released a list of 259 projects in need of financial assistance, mostly construction of remote schools and kindergartens and labs for universities.
