The HelpAge International (HAI) and the Big Lottery Fund of Britain has launched the first ever project in Vietnam to improve the living conditions of the elderly who are affected by the global AIDS pandemic.

Founded in October 20, 1930, today, VWU is 75 years old. Over the past 75 years, the Union has grown up in strength. The nation-wide emulation movement launched by the Union has attracted millions of women throughout the country, contributing to the national patriotic emulation movements, raising the status and position of the women and the women’s union as well.

On the International Day for the Elderly people 1st October, the VWU in cooperation with Help Age International Organization (HAI) held a press conference on the topic “The Role of the Elderly Women on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care for HIV Infected People, Orphans and Vulnerable Children”.

It is normal to pass an entrance examination to University, but passing with maximum scores in all 3 subjects is rarely seen. Surprisingly, one of few people who broke the record was a sticky rice vending girl in Nghi Xuan commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province - Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang, the champion among newly admitted students of Vinh Pedagogy University.

Towards the 60th commemoration of the August Revolution and the National Day of 2nd September, the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Police’s Foundation and 75th commemoration of VWU Foundation, from 11 to 12 August, Presidium of Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) organized a pilgrimate to historical places in Tuyen Quang province where Central VWU located during the Resistance War against the French (1950-1954).

Seven young women, who have formed a dong dang, or peer group, to both prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and help those already infected in Thanh Hoa Province on the central coast, are linked by a common fate.

In 2005, the Family Planning Association of the Republic of Korea continued its support of youth HIV/aids prevention in Vietnam through a donation of US$ 55,000 (together with US$ 20,000 in 2004).

More than 344,000 poor female-headed households benefited from VWU’s assistance in hunger eradication, poverty alleviation and economic development.

A two day meeting in Hanoi on May 17th and 18th promoted the patriotic movement of contributing to industrialisation and modernisation was attended by almost 300 women.

That is a topic of the seminar co-organized by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalid and Social Affairs (MOLISA), Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Vietnam Trade Union and the American Educational Development (AED) in HaLong city, Quang Ninh province for 2 days from 20-21 July 2005.

The “long haired army” embodies the struggle of women in the southern part of Vietnam during the resistance to the America war.

On the 6th of April 2004, the Scientific Council of the Central Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU), chaired by Madam Ha Thi Khiet, President of the Vietnam Women’s Union, Chairwomen of Scientific Council of the Central Vietnam Women’s Union, organized a meeting to approve the 6 scientific thematical studies relating to the VWU activities.

The workshop was conducted for 2 days, on 17 and 18 June 2005 in Hanoi by the Central Vietnam Women’s Union in collaboration with APCASO, POLICY/USAID and UNAIDS.

In Vietnam, nowadays gender awareness is still influenced by Confucianism. The patriarchal social relations between men and women result in dependant and secondary position of women in the family.

The KOVA awards committee just held an awards ceremony on 7th August 2004, at which 2 outstanding groups and 23 individuals received recognition.

Facing the situation that employment has become a critical, not merely economic, but also social, political issue of the country, on 11 April, 1992, the Council of Ministers, now called Government issued Resolution N0 120/HDBT on employment stating that “employment creation is the responsibility of the State, different sectors, social organizations and each laborer”.
