World Population Day, July 11: Focus on Family Planning

15/07/2009
Being able to plan how many children to have and when to have them is a recognized human right. Family planning is essential to slowing population growth, women’s empowerment and gender equality.

In the lead up to World Population Day on July 11, UNFPA in Viet Nam has prepared three Fact Sheets that provide updated, accurate information about population and family planning in Viet Nam, and worldwide. They include statistics such as these:

·Viet Nam’s population is projected to grow to 88 million by 2010 and to 94 million by 2015.

·68% of women aged 15-49 use modern contraceptives, but

·85% of the cost of contraceptives is covered by donors, and this support will be phased out by 2010

·There are about 500,000 abortions every year in Viet Nam. Adolescent abortions account for one third of the total.

By helping women avoid unwanted and poorly timed pregnancies, family planning can save millions of infants’ and children’s lives each year, prevent one fourth to one third of all maternal deaths, and also help to slow rates of population growth.
