Workshop discusses marriages with foreigners

12/06/2006
Since 2003, more than 40,000 Vietnamese women have married foreigners, mostly from China, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea. Most of the women came from southern cities and provinces such as Can Tho and Tay Ninh.

The figure was released at a workshop on marriages with foreigners held by the Vietnam Women’s Union in Ho Chi Minh City on June 9.

According to the Ministry of Justice, many complicated issues have risen after such marriages, including birth certificates for babies, residence registration after divorce, and illegal marriage brokering centres, which stirred up negative information in and outside the country.

Speaking at the conference, Ha Thi Khiet, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women Union, asked for practical measures, alongside co-ordination with functional agencies, to deal with the issue and minimise bad impacts of marriages with foreigners on society.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Viet Thanh, deputy head of the General Department of Police, proposed that Vietnam pay attention to finalising the legal system and strengthen the State management of marriages with foreigners.
