Women of Vietnam Newspaper: six decades of development

On March 8th, 1948 the first bulletins credited to a Vietnamese women’s newspaper were circulated in Viet Bac – the holy revolutionary base of Vietnam during the resistance against the French colonialists.

This historic day became the founding day of the Women of Vietnam Newspaper. As an orthodox voice of Vietnam Women’s Union, Women of Vietnam Newspaper were encouraged to develop rapidly nationwide. In the wartime, many reporters volunteered to cover hot news in fierce Southern warfield. Two female reporters did sacrifice their life for the country. Since then, the Vietnam Women’s Union-owned newspaper has been the official information channel of Vietnamese delivering official information and documents of the State, Women’s Union and many movements of women in Vietnam and globe. It covers every walk of women’s life, presenting a truthful picture of Vietnam to the world and conveying information from other parts of the globe to people and media organizations back home.

 

After six decades of development, the Women of Vietnam Newspaper has grown into a prestigious newspapers and magazines serving as a reliable information centre of the women in Vietnam and the region. Historical moments, fierce battles current events, production activities and the daily life of the people, especially issues of women and children, are all captured by Women of Vietnam Newspaper’s reporters, journalists andphotographers.

 

In renovation period of Vietnam (Doi Moi), layout and content of the newspaper have been freshed with 4 related magazines, such as “Weekly Edition”, “Happy Families”, “Women’s World” and English-edition of quarterly Women of Vietnam review. The circulation of Women of Vietnam has been up to nearly 1 million copies per month. Today, Women of Vietnam Newspaper is o­n top ten most popular newspaper among nearly 700 newspapers and magazines in Vietnam. The newspaper is highly appreciated by readers because it has got a stately and sentimental writing style; cover all activities of Vietnam Women’s Union concern to various burning issues of women and children; establish a forum of women to share experiences o­n building up happy families, feeding and training babies as well as upgrading their knowledge to suit various demands of the modern life.

 

Its contributions to the nation have also been acknowledged with Independence Order-first class, the Labour Order-first class, and many other noble orders and medals of Vietnam Women’s Union, Ministry of Culture and Information as well as Vietnam Journalists’ Association.
