VWU letter to Korean organizations

28/04/2006
Yesterday (Apr. 28), together with a letter to the Chosun Daily, VWU sent letters to several Korean organizations, namely the Ministry of Gender Equality, Korea Women’s Inventors Association, Dasi Hamkle Center, Korea Women’s Hot Line, Korea Women’s Development Institute and Korea Women Entrepreneurs Association, as follows:

April 27th , 2006

Vietnam Women's Union would like to extend to you our warm greetings and best wishes.

We write this letter to seek for your support and co-operation.

Vietnamese people, especially our women, are angry about the article "Vietnamese Young Women Coming to Korea – A Land of Hopes" published in the Chosun Daily Newspaper on April 21, 2006. The article has abused Vietnamese women' s dignity and rights, particularly those who are married to Korean men. We deeply regret that this article has caused severe reactions in our country.

In Viet Nam, marriage between foreigners and Vietnamese women based on mutual respect and love, is protected by law. With a view of protecting women's rights and legitimate interests at home as well as abroad, the Vietnam Women' s Union sees women being trafficked in any forms as victims who need our necessary protection and assistance. Any practices related to illegal marriage, violating our morality and laws, are voiced by the public and addressed by the law.

However, we are impressed at the timely protest by several organizations and individuals in Korea, including overseas Vietnamese students about the lack of responsibility and indifference of the article.

Although the Korean Embassy, based in Hanoi has extended an apology on behalf of the Chosun Daily Newspaper, we do hope this mistake never happens again.

In this regard, the Vietnam Women's Union hopes to receive stronger support and co-operation from you as well as other organizations and individuals to protect the legitimate rights of Vietnamese women and strongly critise any acts violating Vietnamese women's dignity and human rights.

To address this problem in the long run and to secure women's dignity and happiness, it is crucial to have concerted actions and co-operation among concerned agencies and social organizations in our two countries.

With Regards.

Vietnam Women’s Union
