VN Chess Players Take all 3 Tickets to World C’ships

Following Le Quang Liem, Le Thanh Tu and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Viet Nam on Thursday obtained two other berths for the World Chess Championships in Mexico in September this year.

The qualifiers of zone 3.3 held o­n Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province, wrapped up Thursday with three players qualified – all Vietnamese.


Le Thanh Tu won the women’s competition with 7.5 points, taking the o­nly ticket for women to the World Championships. Mongolia’s Mongontuul Bathuyag came second, followed by Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Dang Bich Ngoc of Viet Nam, in third, fourth and fifth.


In the men’s competition, Quang Liem won o­n Wednesday and Truong Son ranked second after all.

Dao Thien Hai, also of Viet Nam, who earned an Asian Games silver last December, came third, unqualified for the World Championships. Filipino player Marino Nelson was fourth and Viet Nam’s Nguyen Anh Dung ranked fifth.


Vietnamese players had expected two berths for the World Championships but they booked three places after all.
